The Library recognizes and appreciates that members of the university and the community are interested in donating publications to the Library's collections. Due to the COVID-19 situation, the UC Berkeley libraries will temporarily suspend the acceptance of donated materials to our general collections until further notice. Please do not bring donations of gifts in kind to the libraries or other campus locations.
If you have rare or archival materials that may be of interest, please contact The Bancroft Library or the C. V. Starr East Asian Library. Even though we might not be able to accept gifts in kind at this time, a curator will welcome discussing the gift with you. Any additional inquiries should be directed to Dirk Kennedy at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Gifts of scholarly materials to the Library of the University of California at Berkeley have historically represented a significant element in the development of the university's outstanding research collections. The Library selectively accepts scholarly and research materials that extend the breadth and depth of our outstanding collections. In particular, scholarly works of any age in subjects collected, but not already owned by the Library are welcome. Materials that fall outside the scope of the Library’s collecting policy, outdated books, duplicate works, materials in poor physical condition, and most journals cannot be accepted.
Gifts are accepted with the understanding that upon receipt the university becomes the owner of the material and will determine retention, location, cataloging treatment, and other considerations relating to use or disposition. Materials not added to the collections may be offered to other academic libraries, or sold in Library book sales with the proceeds being used to purchase new material.
Inquiries about potential donations should be directed to Dirk Kennedy at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Appraisal and tax considerations
The Library acknowledges all gifts in writing. The letter of acknowledgement notes the number of volumes (or approximate number if it’s a large collection) received but does not include a list of the items or an estimate of the value of the gift.
The appraisal of a gift to the Library for income tax purposes is the responsibility of the donor. The Library, as an interested party in any donation to itself, cannot make an estimation regarding the monetary value of a gift. The Library will provide assistance as to sources of information for evaluation purposes and suggest appropriate professional appraisers who might be consulted. Because of tax considerations, donors may wish to discuss prospective donations and appraisals with their tax advisor.
